 Intro to Reiki

Usui Reiki originated in Japan in the early 20th century by Mikao Usui, or Usui Sensei. Reiki is a holistic healing practice and the word "Reiki" is often translated as "universal life energy" or "spiritually guided life force energy." Rei refers to “Universal” and ki refers to the vital life force energy. At its core, Reiki is based on the belief that there is a universal energy that flows through all living things, and a Reiki practitioner can channel this energy to promote healing, balance, and relaxation.

Here's a basic explanation of Reiki:

  • Energy Flow: Reiki practitioners believe that there is a natural and vital energy that flows within and around the human body. When this energy is disrupted or imbalanced, it can lead to physical, emotional, or spiritual issues.

  • Healing Touch: Reiki involves the laying of hands on or near the recipient's body. The practitioner acts as a conduit, channeling this universal life energy to the recipient.

  • Balancing Energy: The purpose of Reiki is to facilitate the balancing and harmonizing of the recipient's energy. It is thought to clear energy blockages, release tension, and promote a state of relaxation and well-being.

  • Holistic Approach: Reiki is a holistic practice, meaning it considers the whole person—body, mind, soul and spirit. It is not a replacement for medical treatment but is often used as a complementary therapy to support overall health and well-being. Reiki is now being used in hospitals by some medical practitioners and in Hospice care facilities.

  • Non-Invasive: Reiki is non-invasive and typically done with the recipient fully clothed. It is suitable for people of all ages and can be performed in person or through distance healing techniques.

  • Personal Experience: The effects of Reiki can vary from person to person. Some report sensations of warmth or tingling during a session, while others experience deep relaxation, some people sleep through the session and there can be an emotional release.

Reiki is often used for stress reduction, pain management, emotional healing, and spiritual growth. It is essential to receive Reiki from a trained and qualified practitioner who follows ethical guidelines to ensure a safe and effective experience.
